"Tilted World" by Tom Franklin and Beth Ann Fennelly, both University of Arkansas graduates, takes readers inside a different era,when Prohibition was big business and foot travel was as likely as horse or car travel in rural Mississippi. The two will read from their novel Friday evening at Nightbird Books in Fayetteville.
If voters fail to approve an $85 rural ambulance fee, Siloam Springs will no longer respond to 911 calls in rural areas surrounding the city.
The Arkansas Department of Health continues to urge residents to get a flu shot as the number of people in the state who have died from flu-related illness continues to climb. The IRS reminds residents that tax season is about to get underway. The risk of wildfire continues to increase across Arkansas. And Sam's Club announces that it will lay off roughly 2 percent of its overall workforce.

And as the Bentonville School District grows, so too does its course offerings. We visit a junior high school as students prepare for mountain biking. Plus, we learn about a Bentonville before Sam Walton.
A newly permitted industrial swine breeding operation, under construction on a tributary of the Buffalo National River, will spread millions of gallons of hog waste on adjacent pastures as fertilizer. But as word spreads about the giant hog farm, an unlikely coalition of opponents is forming to stop it.

Wednesday is the annual Live United Day sponsored by United Way of Northwest Arkansas. Hundreds of people in northwest Arkansas will not go to their office in the morning. Instead, with their boss’ blessing they’ll help out with a project for an area non-profit organization.
An exhibit opening today in the Ann Kittrel Gallery features a handful of dresses designed to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS.
The big pigs around Fayetteville, dressed up by local artists, will soon end their visit. But first an auction will be held so some of the pigs can go home with admirers while raising money and awareness for both Ozark Literacy and local artists.
