Ahead on this edition of Ozarks, for years, Arkansas and Oklahoma have battled over water quality limits with regard to the Illinois River Watershed. We have a report on the state recently agreeing to work together on the issue. Plus, we learn more about a new organization on the University of Arkansas campus known as Pure Charity.Becca from NWA Newspapers gives us a head's up on a lecture and a book signing that we may want to attend Thursday.
Pure Charity encourages and creates a movement of generosity by connecting users to nonprofits locally and throughout the world, and as of last fall, through college campuses. Tomorrow, the organization is holding World Water Thursday on the University of Arkansas campus. Ozarks at Large’s Christina Thomas spoke with a member of the national organization as well as the UA’s two campus catalysts.
The states of Arkansas and Oklahoma straddle the Illinois River watershed. After years of battling in the courts and the press over limiting urban and agricultural pollution, they've agreed to collaborate on a mutually beneficial water quality plan, hoping to turn the page on history.
Dawn McCarthy and Bonnie "Prince" Billy made a gorgeous album of duets when they released The Letting Go in 2006. Both children of the 1970s, they grew up hearing the close harmonies of the Everly Brothers on the radio. In What the Brothers Sang, just released on Drag City, the duo pays tribute to these early superstars of rock and pay homage to the great American songbook.

The pipeline, which will pump heavy crude oil mined from Canadian tar sands through Cushing, Oklahoma to Texas Gulf Coast refineries is providing hundreds of jobs for Oklahomans and sourcing steel pipe in Arkansas. Ahead on Ozarks, workforce officials try to improve job training to meet industry demands. And, we look at the University of Arkansas' autism intervention program.
One Arkansas senator is pressing election officials to resolve issues with the state's voter ID law. Other legislators are pushing to prevent the state lottery commission from implementing video gambling games throughout the state. The FASTER Arkansas committee continues its push for changes in state law to allow public schools to connect to an existing, state-funded fiber optic network. And one Eureka Springs alderman is trying to move forward a decades-long debate on what to do about parking in that city's downtown area.
More than twenty Northwest Arkansas specialty shops sell electronic cigarettes, both disposable and rechargeable. The popular devices deliver a smooth warm nicotine-laced white vapor in variety strengths and flavors. We visit the Velvet Vapor in Rogers and also talk to an Arkansas Department of Health tobacco specialist about pending regulations and potential risks associated with “vaping.”
