In a growing area such as Northwest Arkansas, schools are bound to make the news. The past week was full of education stories involving money in one way or another. Ozarks at Large’s Timothy Dennis takes a look back at a few of those stories.
Ground will be broken early this new year on a much-anticipated Northwest Arkansas highway project, known as the “Fayetteville Flyover” which will create easy access from North College Avenue to both the mall district and Interstate 540.
Jay Jennings has collected the short fiction, reporting and essays of Charles Portis in a new book, Escape Velocity: A Charles Portis Miscellany. He’ll discuss the book at Nightbird Books tomorrow night.
The senior class at Haas Hall Academy had a summer reading assignment. That book has inspired a movement at the school.

Both have broken into the world of screenwriting, specifically for television. Y City is a small town not far from the intersection of highways 71 and 270, it is also the title of a book by Wade Rivers, who came up with the story idea while driving, appropriately, down an Arkansas highway. Oklahoma and Arkansas have battled for years in the press and courts about cleaning up the Illinois River, an impaired stream shared by both states. This winter they agreed to renew a pact to determine a scientific basis to clean the river. But as Jacqueline Froelich reports, Arkansas industrial interests have since issued letters to EPA requesting a suspension of the current clean water standard.
