Ahead on this edition of Ozarks, we continue our series on poverty in Arkansas, taking a look at some of the historic reasons why the state for decades has battled a higher poverty level than other states. And, a new effort to raise the number of people with college degrees in the region. Five area institutions are working together to encourage adults to finish the work they started on campus but didn't complete.

An updated list is available at the organization's Facebook page.According to a U.S. Census Bureau report released last week, in 2010 and 2011, close to 15 percent of Americans were living under the federal poverty line, but in Arkansas, that number was as high as 17 percent. The state has consistently ranked among the states with the highest rates of poverty. On Ozarks at Large this week, we will examine Arkansas' poverty problem.
