Tony deBrum, Foreign Minister for the Republic of the Marshall Islands, is on a mission. He’s alerting the world on how his Pacific island nation is starting to submerge due to rising seas caused by climate change. And as witness to a decade of cold-war atmospheric nuclear bomb tests on the Marshalls, Minister deBrum is also calling for global nuclear disarmament. Several groups worked through the weekend to gather signatures for their respective ballot initiatives before the deadline to submit petitions today. The Oklahoma Department of Health has confirmed the state's first death due to Heartland virus—a new tick-borne illness discovered in the mid-South. So far no cases have been documented in Arkansas. Jacqueline Froelich spoke with an Oklahoma epidemiologist to find out the status of the virus and how to avoid be bitten.The latest state revenue report shows a surplus for the end of the fiscal year. State and local leaders celebrated the opening of the 71-B Flyover last night in Fayetteville, and Rogers is working on building a new, modern fire station for the central part of the city.

Southwestern Electric Power Company plans to install a new 48-mile long 345-kV transmission line across northern Benton and Carroll Counties to prevent outages and improve service to the region, the company says. Thousands of affected residents, expected to crowd public comment hearings scheduled next week, will claim it’s destructive. But most remain in the dark about the project’s purpose.
