Ozarks At Large
Tom Vilsack, the country's Secretary of Agriculture, was the esteemed speaker of yesterday's Dale and Betty Bumpers Distinguished Lecture at the University of Arkansas. He took the opportunity to speak candidly with the standing room only crowd about short-, medium-, and long-term ag public policy goals, and about opening lines of communication.
This weekend more than 20 poets, both local and from out of town, will read their work during the Burning Chair Readings at Nightbird Books in Fayetteville.Katy Hneriksen gives us a preview of this week's KUAF Sunday Symphony, as well as a look at this month's Community Cinema event at the Fayetteville Public Library.
Wildlife biologist and nature recordist, Joe Neal, provides a lesson in upside down birding. Neal is coauthor of “Arkansas Birds,” published by the University of Arkansas Press. His latest book In the Province of Birds, a Western Arkansas Memoir, is published by Half-Acre Press. 
Tartufi is a trio from San Francisco coming to Nightbird Books in Fayetteville tomorrow night. Their latest CD is “These Factory Days.” As OAL’s Katy Henriksen reports, the trio… made up of Lynne Angel, Brian Gorman and Ben Thorne… doesn’t always do things conventionally.Gloria Goodwin Raheja is a professor of anthropology at the University of Minnesota and spoke on the University of Arkansas campus this spring. Her upcoming book is titled Logan County Blues: Frank Hutchison in the Sonic Landscape of the Appalachian Coalfields, which explores the injustices committed by the coal mining companies against coal miners, and how the miners fought against the companies through music.
