The commercial killing of horses for food ended in the U.S. six years ago, but was revived in 2011. Three horse slaughterhouses were set to open in the U.S., including one in Missouri. But on Jan. 16th Congress declined funding USDA inspections for horse meatpacking plants, basically shutting down the industry. We speak with An Na, author of A Step From Heaven, a book that was awarded the Michael L. Prince Award when it was published a decade ago. Critics and reviewers commended the book's characters for speaking like a child without being too precocious or condescending. The author will speak in Fayetteville later this month.

Solar energy installation is on the rise in Arkansas—a solar rich state. But unlike other solar states, Arkansas lacks incentives for solar development as well as utility standards. Add to that, this year, renewable energy advocates will face organized opposition from carbon producers, who don’t want them on the grid.Though Arkansas is still 30% above the rest of the nation, the state is finally seeing declining rates when it comes to new lung cancer diagnoses and moralities due to lung cancer. We hear from Dr. Gary Wheeler with the Arkansas Department of Health.

Ahead on this edition of Weekend Ozarks, a float along the Buffalo River nearly a year after a hog farm started business near the waterway, and a brand new water park in Siloam Springs is almost ready for the public. And speaking of being ready for the public, the Walmart AMP in Rogers last night had its public debut. Blake Shelton was the first headliner to perform in the new venue, but a few days earlier, we got a sneak preview of the facility.
Particia Adamsco-founded the Natural Resources Defense Council, the NRDC, with her husband John forty years ago. The story of the founding of the NRDC...and what's happened since...makes up the bulk of the memoir "A Force of Nature" co-written by John and Patricia Adams with George Black.
Thanksgiving means many things...and almost all of them are included in the new cookbook "The Commonsense Kitchen" by Tom Hudgens. There is food, of course, but also essays about why we should be thankful for our food.

Determining the perimeter of a parcel of land is the complex business of a land surveyor. Several dozen licensed surveyors operate around the four-county area. But Jacqueline Froelich set her sights on quite possibly the region's most rugged survey crew and follows them into the Ozarks outback.
